”Ideas competition for the railway area of central Lahti”
The meaning of the Finnish word “radanvarsi”: ’Radanvarsi’ translates into English as ‘trackside’ or ‘beside the tracks’ or ‘along the tracks’.
What sort of area beside the tracks in Lahtiwould you like?
An international ideas competition is in progress for the development of the area along the railway tracks in the centre ofLahti. The competition area is situated in the centre of the entire urban fabric, in a highly visible location south of the Salpausselkä ridge, and it is an essential part of the development of theLahticity centre. The aim of the competition is to find an idea which is of a high quality from the cityscape and functional aspects. It would also take into consideration the future potential for development in the construction of the most central railway track section in Lahti.
The citizens’ participation in the planning of the area has a central role. Citizens with widely varying viewpoints are included in the generation of ideas for the area. These comments and ideas can be followed through these webpages.

What kind of city do the inhabitants dream about?
In connection with the city ofLahti’s “Radanvarsi” trackside site, the city’s inhabitants were asked what kinds of new ideas and hopes are inspired in them about the urban fabric of the city centre. We have been in contact with around 100 local inhabitants during the spring and summer. We received many new ideas, wishes, and thoughts. Thanks to all the participants!
The ideas team’s kick-off event at theRauhankatu streetworkroom
The railway area project is one of the official projects in the WDC 2012 project, in which the objective is the development of a human-centred urban environment.
A lively discussion has again taken place at theRauhankatu streetworkroom about urban planning and how citizens can participate in and influence the development of their own urban environment. TheLahtiresidents really have both enthusiasm and ideas for the development of the central area of the city and in particular the area along the railway tracks. It’s really superb! J
In this blog I have put up photos mostly from last week’s workshops.
